Ocean Liner Postcards in Marine Art 1900-45 by Robert Wall, This book provides a fascinating insight not only into the art of a particular school of marine painters in the early part of the twentieth century, but also into the history of a time of great technological change. These changes were to bring about the introduction of marine art postcards, contribute to their huge popularity and then lead to their demise, all in the space of some fifty years. The official acceptance of the picture postcard by the postal services in Britain in 1902 came at the height of the North Atlantic passenger traffic. Postcards on all themes were soon being produced and the shipping companies saw in the postcard a convenient and cost effective advertising medium. Marine artists were used in preference to photographers partly due to the difficulty of effectively photographing large ships at sea and due to the need for good color. As a result, a significant school of very competent marine artists grew up around the postcard industry. These postcards provide a nostalgic look at forgotten days of leisured and luxury travel and the accompanying text records the ships, their builders, and the great names in shipping companies.
Space Postman/El Cartero Espacial New titles in Barron's popular series of language-learning picture storybooks teach very young children the fundamentals of a second language even as they are learning their own. On each page, a single line of amusing story text is presented in two languages--in English and either in Spanish or in French. Preschool children introduced to these books receive a very early start in learning a new language at the same time they're learning the language spoken in their households. A closing section in each book presents a guide that will help parents teach boys and girls to pronounce the words aloud in both languages. In this story, written in both English and Spanish, Captain Crater flies his rocket ship to different planets and delivers mail to his many friends. Then one day, he loses his mailbag somewhere in space.
Transport by sailing ship - Any ship is a total institution; a sailing ship on the open seas, being dependent on the winds, is especially isolated; in the age of sail, the technology of shipboard life and the lack of technology for communicating emergencies and of timely means of rescue made ships the probable epitome of the total-institution problem (with the most arguable alternative being space stations and outer-space exploration vehicles). Teenagers from Outer Space - Teenagers from Outer Space is a 1959 science-fiction B-movie about an extraterrestrial ship landing on Earth to use it as a farm for its food supply. The crew of the ship includes several teenagers (who ironically look quite old for teenagers), two of whom oppose each other in their activities. Space combat - Space combat is a game type that involves playing in a space environment, this environment can include an action based game such as any of the Rouge Squadron games; or a strategy based game such as Microsoft's Abandonware Allegiance. Typically these games include a type of ship, mounted with guns and/or missiles and other accessories. Hostile Space - Hostile Space is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that takes place in a vast persistent galaxy. Players take on the role of a star ship captain with goals including planetary exploration, mining, bounty hunting, smuggling goods, and taking on terrible space monsters.
