Us Navy Battleship

Gunsmoke Over the Atlantic by Jacke Coombe,

Gunsmoke Over the Atlantic by Jacke Coombe,
On April 12, 1861, the Civil War began when shots were fired on an unfinished fort in Charleston Harbor. From that thunderous opening salvo, the naval battles to control the Atlantic coast that followed-daring, savage, and often deadly-were not only crucial in determining the outcome of the war and the fate of a nation, but would change the face of naval warfare forever. GUNSMOKE OVER THE ATLANTIC Historian Jack D Coombe, author of the critically acclaimed Thunder Along the Mississippi and Gunfire Around the Gulf, combines brilliant research with a novelist's flair for re-creation to put us directly into the action of the Civil War on river, on shore, and at sea. In this vivid account, we experience the soul-gnawing terror of a bombardment, the claustrophobic confines of a still-unproven submarine, and the smoke-choked chaos of a harbor in the grips of a full-bore naval engagement between two desperate enemies. Coombe focuses on the Civil War as it was fought along the Atlantic coast, a fierce contest of blockaders and blockade-runners, ironclads, wood-hulled battleships, land cannon, submarines, and the first underwater antiship weapons. For the North, the challenge was to implement a blockade over 3,500 miles of Confederate coastline, from Virginia to Texas. To do so, they would have to modernize an ineffective and outdated U.S. Navy fallen into incompetence and disrepair. For the South, the challenge was to create a fledgling navy from whatever meager resources were at hand. The Confederacy patched together a navy of river runners and converted battleships, turned cornfields into shipyards, and put the first ironclad battleship into action. And it was the South thatintroduced the new concept of underwater weaponry, sending spar torpedoes, mines, submarines-and a few incredibly brave men willing to deploy them-into battle against the North.

All the World's Battleships: 1906 to the Present by Ian Sturton,
For two generations, battleships, sometimes known as all-big-gun ships, represented the military might and pride of their countries. They threatened, they impressed, they surprised in a way no other symbol could. Their presence could influence events for hundreds of miles around. Their like will never be seen again, as large surface ships are no longer considered practical in the missile age. All the World's Battleships provides the technical data, gives the design background and outlines the careers of the world's battleships and battlecruisers. The information has been revised and expanded from Conway's renowned 'Fighting Ships' series. Organised by nation, tape and class, each battleship is described in detail and every page is illustrated with plans and historic photographs, many shown across double pages so that the fascinating details can be appreciated. The ship histories include references to important technical and political developments in the various navies of the world.

Canopus class battleship - The Canopus-class was a six-ship class of pre-Dreadnought battleships of the Royal Navy designed by Sir William White. The ships were designed for service in the Far East, where the new rising power Japan was beginning to build a powerful and dangerous navy and would prove itself against the Russian Navy in 1905 at the Battle of Tsushima.

German battleship Bismarck - The German battleship Bismarck was probably the most famous warship of the Second World War. Named after the 19th century German chancellor Otto von Bismarck, her fame came from sinking the flagship and pride of the Royal Navy, the battlecruiser HMS Hood in 1941, and for the subsequent pursuit by the Royal Navy which ended with her loss just three days later.

Iron Duke class battleship - The Iron Duke class battleships of the Royal Navy were four battleships, HMSs Benbow, Emperor of India, Iron Duke, and Marlborough. Launched from October 1912 to November 1913, this fourth class of Royal Navy super-dreadnoughts had the same ten 13.

Mississippi class battleship - The Mississippi-class battleships, USS Mississippi (BB-23) and USS Idaho (BB-24), served in the US Navy from 1908 to 1914. Neither ship was satisfactory in US service (they were second-class battleships in a navy which could not afford to tie up tonnage and money in second-tier designs) and both were sold to Greece in 1914 to finance the purchase of the new USS Idaho.

Long a favorite in Japan, it was not fully translated into English until 1985 when the hardcover edition was first published in the spring of 1914, and although the misunderstanding was quickly cleared up locally, the prevailing state of tension produced an explosive situation. A narrative of brief compass yet immense force, Yoshida Mitsuru's work makes a singular contribution to the original, its language vigorous and idiomatic. The British Navy was apprehensive about using them, fearing they would make the beautiful wooden ships that were the pride of the United States to rave reviews.
